Come on man, give me a hug!"

ReplyDeleteIsland Records' first Black executive, Lister Hewan-Lowe, is not just a friend of BM.
ReplyDeleteLister Hewan-Lowe, with Chris Blackwell, ran Island Records for over 9 years and made Bob Marley a universal icon. Lister made the movie Rockers with Ted Bafalufus, started the first reggae cable TV show in 1970 called "RootS" where Reggae Super Star Jacob Miller made his first USA TV apparance in NYC; Hewan-Lowe signed Michael Rose - Black Uhuru etc.
He worked with Grace Jones, Jah-Malla, Dillinger, Sugar Minott, Peter Tosh, Robert Palmer, Steve Windwood, Paragons, U2 Bono, Sinead O'conor and Ayo.
Lister's vocals can be heard in Public Enemy (with Chuck-D's) on the Def-Jam Record Anti-Nigger Machine. Lister is in the video Anti-Nigger Machine Public Enemy. Lister perfomed live with Public Enemy on stage in NYC at Studio 54, back in the days when Public Enemy was the hottest group in America. Lister worked with the movies Bongo Man, Country Man, etc.
Clappers Records was founded by Lister Hewan-Lowe the late 70s and is famous for Hip-Hop's first political record, the hit "How we gonna make the Black Nation rise - Brother-D with Collective Effort."
It's a shame that Blackwell and Island Records has left Lister Hewan-Lowe out of it's well planded 50th aniversary in May 2009. Where are the investigative journalists to expose this?
In the New York Times (12 April 2009) article written by Niko Koppel and photographed by Michelle V. Agins there is a picture of Lloyd 'Bull Wakie' Barnes. In this picture, to the left of his face is Lister's Project at Island Records - the sound track L.P.of the Movie "Rockers."

There is no mention of Lister Hewan-Lowe in the NYTimes article. Lister started the first real USA/NYC political reggae record company, a reggae record company, that in the 70's on *WUSB 90.1 FM NY defended gay people's rights as in REGGAY; the rights of women; the oppressed and the voiceless.
Lister invented the "No God (aka JaH) Zone" on BurnbabyBurn/ Clappers - Pacifica Radio WBAI-99.5 FM NY.
Is it a lie that Chris Blackwell can't find Lister? Is it a lie that Sly and Robbie can't find Lister? Is it a lie that no journalist can find Lister? If the World famous photographer Daniel can, the whole world can. Lister is Lister!Live 99Cinco - for the first time heard on commercial radio WTBQ-1110 AM and WTBQ-99.1 FM, Warwick New York, a first for reggae heard simultaneously on AM and FM where Political Reggae Meets Political Talk.

Michael Butler, from the broadway play Hair, joins Lister Hewan-Lowe this week 15 April 2009 on Lister's very new and Hot Radio show WTBQ-1110 AM and 99.1 FM NY,USA. Butler is also on Pacifica Radio WBAI-99.5 FM, New York and on the World's longest running Reggae Radio show in history " Saturday's A Party WUSB 90.1 FM tony BrooK" (from 1970 to the present on WUSB 90.1FM Stony Brook, Long Island NY), WUSB.FM, WBAI.ORG, WTBQ.COM. The latest Arbitron Ratings on Lister's WTBQ- Radio show has trippled. Call WTBQ 845-651-1110.
* Saturday's A party WUSB 90.1 FM Stony Brook is the first and still is the only reggae show in history to defend Gay Peoples Rights from 1970 when it was not popular to do so. The poet Staceyann Chin has never visited WUSB Radio or this very popular Reggae show "Saturday's A Party WUSB"... We have reached out to her and still we are asking her to come as Bob Marley and the Wailers would say "I'm still waiting" the Reggae hit.
